Music Makers: At Home in the World and Around the World

This 34-hour, five-and-one-half day workshop is for anyone interested in teaching children age four and above. It encompasses two sequential curricula filled with lesson materials for 60 weeks (two years of classes). In addition to discussions on child development, how children learn music, and demonstration classes, this workshop will also cover program planning to help teachers turn their newly-found knowledge into viable businesses.

The 4-year old child is now ready for sequential learning. In the first 30 lessons, Music Makers: At Home in the World, you will build on a base of sensorial experiences to:

bullet Draw the child in, starting with a familiar setting - My Home Place - and move to different, less familiar habitats - The Woodlands, The Cattail Marsh, and The Meadow.
bullet Discover together all of the "critters" that live in these settings, explore their sounds and the way they move. You will hear them first in isolation and then in the context of their environment.
bullet Nurture the children's tonal and rhythm aptitudes by singing, moving, and dancing to music that is about the inhabitants - Hop Old Squirrel, Here Comes a Bluebird, Grasshoppers Three - all the while gaining more control of the body and singing voice.
bullet Start looking at familiar tonal and rhythm patterns in notation.
bullet Continue to play instruments, often using them to create ensembles to accompany the singing of favorite songs.

In the following 30 lessons, Music Makers: Around the World, you will:

bullet Explore the music of other cultures - British Isles, Amerindians, African-American, and Germany - hearing not only the songs, but the instruments, and ensembles that are indigenous to that culture.
bullet Learn dances that represent the culture - The Blarney Boys Jig, Rain Dance: Iona, Mr. Banjo, and Last Dance Polka.
bullet Work with many more isolated patterns written in music notation. Begin looking for those patterns on song pages.
bullet Build more complex instrumental ensembles.
bullet Learn an increased repertoire of songs to sing.
bullet Be equipped to teach the comprehensive music skills that benefit the child no matter where his future interests lead - piano lessons, school band or choir, math league or the soccer field!
